sounds like you're talking about beat juggling, one of the mainstays of the
art of turntablism, and a standard of hip-hop trick djing for more than a
decade (aka, if you haven't seen it, you haven't sought it). in the us,
beat juggling is usually the focus of east coast crews like the x-men (who
only recently have begun to show they give two shits about scratching),
while innovation on the scratch has been the focus of west coast crews like
the scratch pickles, the beat junkies, and the space travelers/scratch
hamsters. that's begun to break down, of course, and i don't mean to
suggest that there exists some kind of rude, crude version of the
ridiculous east coast/west coast childishness that's been dragging hip-hop
down for the last five or six years. i'm not that familiar with koala's
style, but from what i've heard he sounds to me like one of a few but
growing breed of djs (babu, shortkut, z-trip, eight-ball) with a firm foot
in both approaches...if you enjoyed his set, i suggest you track down the
second and latest installment (and the first and greatest, after that) of
the bomb's _return of the dj_ compilation, featuring a sick, sick koala
cutup, as well as tracks from dj eq, z-trip, roc raider, dj format, lf
peee, ruthless, godfather (big up detroit!), and dj jeff, among others.
artists like this put a lot of whack shit in perspective. when all else
fails, return to the source...props to ninja for knowing what's what.
